INTARSIA

Portriats

I will make intarsia portraits for you.  To view them and details about them click on the following links: intarsia pet portraits, intarsia wildlife portraits, intarsia people portraits, and intarsia fantasy figure portrait.

My intarsia portraits are not mass produced. They are hand-crafted from start to finish. Each portrait is created with a variety of natural wood selections, walnut, cedar, pine, aspen, oak, and other hardwoods.  The pieces of wood used are generally not stained or painted. Each piece is hand selected because of its different grains and shades giving this unusual work of art a beautiful contrast of colors.

For this reason each portriat takes many hours to create, but renders a finished product that may be enjoyed for years to come. All the pieces are individually cut to fit together with the next piece. The pieces are contoured by sanding to give them final shape. The finished piece is given 3 or more coats of clear finish to protect and enhance it. An intarsia design may be repeated, but each piece is unique because no two pieces of wood are exactly the same.

The steps in producing a PET PORTRAIT are as follows:

Pet portraits begin with your photo(s).  Please submit at least two and more if possible, fairly good, in focus photographs, either digital or standard sent by USPS or other carrier.  Color photographs are essential.

Close-up photos work the best.

Please indicate your 1st choice, 2nd choice etc. As pictures vary in light intensity sometimes the first choice does not make the best portrait.  Where possible the portrait will be made in the pose of your first choice.  Should this not seem practical, I will inform you and we can discuss a pose.

Hard copy photographs submitted will be returned with your completed order.

I will examine the photographs and let you know whether they are suitable.  If they are I will use them as the basis for a hand-made Pattern.  Portrait patterns are designed using computer technology.

I will send a copy of the pattern to you via email.

If you like the pattern, we will arrange payment.

Once payment is received, I will make the portrait.

I will make the portrait by hand.   No laser or other computer carving technology is used.

The steps in producing a WILDLIFE PORTRAIT are as follows:

Discuss with me the animal you want to have a portrait of.  If it is one that I already have done, I will make a copy of it for you using the same materials as in the original.

If it is not one included in my blog, you can either send me a photograph to show what you want.  If you know the source of that photograph and I can get permission to use it, which is seldom the case, I will make a portrait from it.

If we cannot get permission to use the photograph, or can’t find a suitable photograph I will make up a pattern using common photographs of that type animal and send it to you for review.

When we have agreed on a pattern, we will arrange payment.

Once payment is received, I will make the portrait by hand.

PATTERNS

My intarsia patterns are generally designed for intermediate and advanced woodworkers who have some experience in working with intarsia.

If you like one of my patterns but do not wish to make it yourself, I will make it for you of a size and using the woods you prefer.  If interested contact me at hlesliesimmons@gmail,com

To order send me an email at hlesliesimmons@gmail.com.  Tell me exactly what you would like to order.

In the case of copies of my intarsia pieces include the number of the piece and its name (130004C Bichon Frise for example).  The “C” designates that it is a copy you want.

For patterns list the number of my pattern and its name (13000PA Bichon Frise for example).  The PA designates a pattern.

I ship patterns by Gmail in .pdf format.

For portraits and other works tell me exactly what you are interested in.  Make sure to stipulate whether it is intarsia (such as a pet portrait) or scroll saw such as a portrait of an ordinary person or famous person.

For prints and other art work tell me which print you are interested in purchasing.  Be sure to include number and name of the print.

In all cases I will respond with detailed information as to cost, shipping details, and delivery time.

SHIPPING

INTARSIA AND SCROLL SAW PORTRAITS

I generally ship intarsia portraits and scroll saw portraits by UPS.  Cost depends on the size and weight of the package.  Previously I shipped by USPS but experienced so many damaged pieces when shipping by Uncle Sam’s snail that I have lately switched to using only UPS.  The cost is slightly higher but I think it is worth the cost.  If you want to take the risk, I will ship by USPS but you will have to pay the cost if anything goes wrong.  Remember that sending a portrait back for repairs and returning it to you can cost $100 or more when it is repackaged.

To make more sure of safe delivery I now have portraits packaged by UPS as well.  The cost of packaging is included in the shipping charges.   So, shipping charges may appear large but  there are reasons over which I have no control.

I insure all packages for shipping and include the cost of the insurance in the shipping charge.   If you want to skip the insurance I will remove it from the shipping charge but  the risk will be on your shoulders.   Insurance is another reason for not using USPS.  With insurance by USPS the piece cannot be repaired until the claim is settled which can take six months or longer.  As often as not the claim is denied because of their decision that packaging was at fault.  Remember this is a quasi government agency.  It acts like the government does.

INTARSIA PATTERNS

To keep shipping charges low, I deliver patterns in .pdf format by Gmail.  There is no charge for these shipments.  For large patterns I ship several .pdf files by Gmail.  These files should be opened with Adobe Reader.  They must be printed and taped together to make the final pattern.

SCROLL SAW  PATTERNS

I deliver scroll saw patterns as a .pdf file attached to a gmail at no charge to you.  Please note that large patterns may require more than one .pdf file, in which case they must b opened, usually by Adobe Reader, printed, and tapped together to make the pattern.

PRINTS

I generally ship prints within the continental U.S. through the United States Postal Service, in a mailing tube at a cost to you of $8.00. Shipping to locations outside the continental U.S may require additional shipping charges.

If you wish shipment outside the continental U.S, send me an email indicating your mailing address and I will tell you the shipping cost.

OTHER WORKS FOR SALE

Finished Work

You can see my other work by clicking on the links at the top of this page.  Much of my finished art work is not for sale but you can commission a similar piece for the prices listed adjacent to the picture in the galleries.

Finished work that is for sale is priced on the various pages of this blog.   Keep in mind that while not everything shown here is indicated as “For Sale” everything in the world is for sale at the right price.

Also if you happen to see another intarsia pattern that you would like to have made and I can obtain the pattern I will be glad to make it for you.

Custom Patterns

I am available to make custom patterns from your photographs or ideas for you to cut.  These can be pet portraits, wildlife portraits, and portraits of people  and almost any subject you are interested in.  These may be symbolic, commemorative, or just something you’d like for your collection or as a gift for a friend or loved one.  People portraits and animal portraits can be combined to make one portrait.  Portraits make marvelous gifts.

Other Commissioned Work

I am available to do commissioned work in pet portraits, wildlife portraits, people portraits, wood sculpture, intarsia, wood cutouts, Christmas ornaments, or scratchboard similar to those shown in this blog.   Refer to the various pages in this blog for examples of my work.

My preferred medium today for pet and wildlife portraits is intarsia. Wikipedia, says that intarsia is “a woodworking technique that uses varied shapes, sizes, and species of wood fitted together to create a mosaic-like picture with an illusion of depth.”  The modern form called wood intarsia is a descended from a long history of wood inlay usually known as marquetry.  The difference is that in marquetry the inlays are usually thin veneer producing a more or less flat surface, whereas in intarsia, the inlays are thicker which produces images with actual depth as well as the illusion of additional depth produced by judicious use of wood colors and grain direction.

My portraits are not mass produced. They are hand-crafted from start to finish. Each portrait is created with a variety of natural wood selections, walnut, cedar, pine, aspen, oak, and other hardwoods.  The pieces of wood used in the creation of my work are NOT stained or painted. Each piece is hand selected because of its different grains and shades giving this unusual work of art a beautiful contrast of colors.

For this reason each work of art takes many long hours to create, but renders a finished product that may be enjoyed for years to come.  All the pieces are individually cut to fit together with the next piece.  The pieces are contoured by sanding to give them final shape.  The finished piece is given three or more coats of polyurathane or polacrylic to protect and enhance it.  An intarsia design may be repeated, but each piece is unique because no two pieces of wood are exactly the same.

Discussion about prospective commissions can take place by email, letter, phone, or direct contact.  Most commissions would normally involve an exchange of ideas between artist and customer, to ensure that the creative output is to the satisfaction of both parties.

The process for making other works is as follows:

Discuss with me the piece you want to have a copy of.  If we agree, I will make a copy of it for you using the same materials as in the original.

If you want a piece that is not one included in my blog, you can either describe what you want or  send me a photograph to show what you want.  If you know the source of that photograph and I can get permission to use it, which is seldom the case, I will make a piece similar to it.

If we cannot get permission to use the photograph, I will make up a pattern using common photographs of that type subject and send it to you for review.

When we have agreed on a pattern, we will arrange payment.

Once payment is received, I will make the piece  by hand.

Payment

Pet Portrait prices vary according to the subject, the number of pets in the portrait, and the size of the portrait, but will usually be similar to the prices shown in the galleries. You can send me digital or hard photographs for a free estimate with no obligation to purchase.  I can usually give an accurate price estimate by simply viewing the pictures.  I will return hard photographs to you.

People portrait prices also vary according to the subject, the number of people in the portrait, the medium, and the size of the portrait. A scrollsaw cutting of a single person’s head and shoulders typically start at $150.00.  Send me a photograph and I will quote a price. Electronic (emailed) photographs are acceptable.  I will return hard copy photograph.

Prices for other commissioned work are set according to the size, design, medium, and intricacy and may vary slightly from the prices shown if the subject is different from that shown.

Shipping charges, if necessary, are additional.

In payment I accept personal or business checks and POSTAL money orders ( please do not send bank drawn money orders) but prefer to be paid by PAYPAL. You do not need a PayPal account to pay me through PayPal. Checks and money orders may be held to clear before work begins.  Payment in full is required before work begins on custom items.

For payment by check, wait for my e-mail response with your total amount due, then mail you check or money order to 101 Camden Road, Colonial Heights, VA.  Make check or money order payable to H. Leslie Simmons. I will start work on your order when the check or money order has cleared.  I will ship your order as soon as it is completed.  I will e-mail you the date I ship your order telling you that it has been shipped.  Depending on the method of shipping I will try to get you a tracking number so that you can see its status.  To pay by PayPal, I will send you an invoice through PayPal to your email address.  You then simply pay PayPal either with a credit card or through your bank account.

Time Schedule

The time schedule for delivery will depend on the purchase.  Already made patterns for example typically take less then a week to ship.  For other shipments, I will provide the shipping time when the work is commissioned.

The time schedule for producing a piece of commissioned work is negotiable within reason and will be established between me and my client at the time of the commissioning.

Returns & Exchanges

Satisfaction is guaranteed and I do accept returns except for patterns.

Refunds will be issued when I receive the item back with shipping charges prepaid in the same condition I shipped it.  I pack all items carefully and do not take responsibility for damage caused by the shipping service.  Damage during shipping will be handled according to the insurance provided.  The refund will be made by my check.  I will refund the entire amount of your payment to me, which includes the cost of the item and shipping one way.

I do everything I can to insure that your order arrives as requested.  Returns and exchanges of custom items will be negotiated if problems arise. Please be aware that, although I will accept returns, I reserve the right not to remake or exchange your custom order if I feel it was made as ordered and was fine quality the first time.
